Fairfax County has the highest population in the area and includes areas inside and outside the betlway. Fairfax County is among the wealthiest counties in the United States.  Loudoun County, outside the beltway, has been the number one fastest growing county in the country recently. Prince William County, also outside the beltway, is also fast growing and like all the Northern Virginia counties, has a strong employment base with high income and economic status. The independent cities such as Alexandria, Falls Church, Fairfax and Manassas lie within these counties, but they are treated as counties as far as searching for homes.  The other counties are quite a bit farther from Washington, DC, but gaining in popularity due to the growth in the area.
